‘Mr Selfridge’ is a must watch. I was a tad late in watching this period drama series which started in January 2013. I totally loved it. And, honestly, can’t wait for the second one.
The show is based on the flamboyant Mr Harry Gordon Selfridge, founder of Selfridges department store. An American who sets his heart at building the very best London has to offer to the world. To the women in specific. His fascination for the opposite sex and his passion to indulge them is for all to see. His marketing gimmicks get people flocking to the store. The year is 1909 and the drama speaks a lot about the fashion in those days. The hats, gloves and coats tell a story of social standing. The difference between the riff-raff and the elite is quite apparent. Lipstick and rouge is for the Gaiety girls and not for respectable women. Heavens! Times have changed.
Watch out for the female characters. They are quite a treat. Lady Loxley, the enchanting socialite and Ellen Love, the glamorous showgirl are worth the mention.
Overall, this is good, refined stuff.
